Censorship and control of social media
There is NO single body that regulates social media
Social Media does fall into regulation/law:
- Data Protection Act,
- Libel
- Race Relations Act
You cannot do anything in the public that puts a division between race
- Criminal Justice & Public Order Act
You cannot do anything in public that puts a division between, sexuality, age, financial status, geographic location
- Race & Religious Hatred Act
You cannot do anything in the public that puts a division between ethnicity or religion
- Criminal Justice and Immigration Act
All people who live in the country and safe and secure and cannot be threatened
Case Study of a Criminal Justice Act problem
In this case study we see the statistics of women and the abuse they receive on social media, due to being targeted by their gender this makes this a Criminal Justice act problem, the hate sent on platforms such as facebook creates a very misogynistic atmosphere this deterring women from making accounts and using the site as regularly.
IPSO - Can monitor press and magazine publishers on social media, e.g they regulate accounts like Daily Mail and BBC
ASA - Can monitor Adverts and advertising content
Ofcom - Can monitor some professionally produced content online
BBFC - monitor film and tv content posted online
Individuals with social media accounts often have to agree to T%C's of employment regarding social media
Individuals make choices about what to publish as a prosumer on social media
The main point is that employees should exercises self regulation to avoid causing any damage to their employer's image on social media.
REGULATION VS CENCORSHIP
- China
- Turkey
- North Korea
These countries exercise tight control of internet access and have censored most external social media.
Instead they have in some cases created approved social media channels and filters search options.
Deep Censorship
North Korea and China also monitor blog posting and online journalism. Dissident (those speaking out against the establishment) journalists, bloggers or activities are identified by state filters and are often imprisoned.
