Instagram was created in 2010 with the purpose of sharing images with friends and family, now the platform has over 1 billion active members, it's the second most used platform after facebook and is one of the biggest social media platforms worldwide.
Looking at instagrams benefits for its users we see a huge range. One of the main benefits being the visual sharing that the platform promotes, the fact that the platforms aim is to visually share aspects of your life with followers is a refreshing and a new way of sharing personal and professional events, since web 2.0 and the rise of technology photos are taken with phones more than ever before this meaning that many visual memories are kept on devices that urge you to share them with friends and family. The sharing of these images allows you to connect with friends and family that you wouldn't normally be able to and to connect with people with similar interests and personalities.
The rise of the app brought new accounts to the app and not just personal accounts but businesses saw the opportunity to build an online empire, with clothing businesses such as Princess Polly, Rebellious Fashion and Tiger Mist, all these shops not having any physical shop however posting images of their clothes online and selling them through the website, this economical side of the platform being beneficial for both the consumer and producer. Tiger Mist currently has 1.4 million followers along with making a estimated yearly profit of 1.8 million pounds, this huge new market for instagram based shops allows people to find unique and trending fashion that wont have been put out in high street shops.
Instagram being a social media giant has also linked up with facebook and twitter this allowing posts to no only be shared to a singular platform but to any that allow posting of images this enables ease for users but also encourages use of all the social media giants this creating a bigger network of friends and family to speak and engage with.
Because of Instagrams visual purpose this has created the rise of social media influencers, social media influencers normally have a huge following and are paid to promote clothes, accessories and other generically fashion related products. Influencers are known to have a very aesthetic layout of their pages and they promote huge brands such as Pretty Little Thing and Boohoo this helps both the brand and the influencer as they both build following and profit.
Due to 70% of Instagrams users being below 30 this means that people normally have a huge network of followers and friends, the platform itself was made for sharing creative moments and the platform encourages its users to post creative images and grow and individual photography style, with filters and settings to edit your images this gives everyday users the ability to create and change images to fit their personal creative style, this encouragement in looking at a more creative outlet is a positive outlet for all users.
