Globalisation - Breaking down physical barriers* in order to release media and operate on a global scale. e.g releasing media in multiple countries and altering the media to suit the audience.

Disney is a huge conglomerate that releases films globally, when releasing the Jungle book live action remake they released it in India first due to its setting of the film, this allowed them to engage with consumers more globally.

Imperialism - When one country imposes they're ideology on another.

Culture Imperialism - when cultures impose they're ideas and social norms on another, e.g western culture imposing they're ideas of the ideal body and appearance 

Amazon is one of the biggest globalised companies in the world, they have grown to become a conglomerate over the internet and selling products after breaking down barriers.

Web 2.0 - The second phase of the internet that allowed everyone to access and interact on the web, this happened roughly in 2005.

Wikinomics - The economy of the web, Tapscott and Williams (2006) the way in which the power of the web has changed the global economy, 

Water cooler - Has a traditional TV audience and encourages people to sit down and watch TV instead of streaming on devices 

Prosumer - (Producer and consumer), people who aren't exactly professionals that create media original products and distribute them online
e.g Justin Bieber before he was famous was discovered on Youtube

UGC - User Generator content, People contributing to a product by creating their own media, About participatory culture -  Henry Jenkins (2006) people make fan art / films, advertising existing products through fan culture, memes

Hypertext - text on a website linking to other text (hyperlinks)

Collaboration - The way producers can use social media to work together on large scale projects that are often international.

Prosumer - An amateur producer who uses digital and online technology to create and distribute media products while remaining a consumer 

Semantic Web - The process of allowing automated process/machines to understand meaning/hyperlinks to personalise content for the audience/user.

Web Utopians - Those who see the web and social media technologies as having a benefit to society as a whole


Electronic agora - online meting spaces such as forums and chat rooms where people can discuss a range of topics and achieve collaboration
- Rheingold  (1991) - is the idea that the web can be used for the exchange of ideas and socialise as avatars, this has been widely adopted by the open source and e-sports communities.
Electronic Agora can be damaging to businesses due to it allowing numerous prosumers to comment on a business, sites such as trip advisor and facebook can ruin business reputations and due to the rise of websites such as trip advisor reputations are really important to new customers and target demographic.

Global Village - the term used to describe how the web instantly connects audiences all over the world
- Marshall McLuhan (1964) - suggested that television would create a global village due to it being a medium central to communicating ideas.
He also predicted a library network accessible everywhere that would allow access to all forms of information (Web 2.0)
